Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who sent in their best wishes after Hrithik Roshan revealed that his father Rakesh Roshan is battling cancer.

Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan has revealed that his father Rakesh Roshan is battling cancer. Actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, 69, has been diagnosed with early stage of squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. Soon after Hrithik broke the news on social media, wishes came in from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of the film fraternity.

Hrithik shared the news via social media on Tuesday morning, before his father was going in for a surgery.

"Asked my dad for a picture this morning. Knew he wouldn't miss gym on surgery day. He is probably the strongest man I know. Got diagnosed with early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat a few weeks ago, but he is in full spirits today as he proceeds to battle it. As a family we are fortunate and blessed to have a leader like him," Hrithik captioned the picture in which the father-son duo have struck the same pose," Hrithik posted.

The note drew speedy recovery and good luck wishes from Modi, the film fraternity and fans. The Prime Minister retweeted Hrithik's post, saying, "Dear Hrithik, praying for the good health of Shri Rakesh Roshanji. He is a fighter and I am sure he will face this challenge with utmost courage."

Hrithik thanked him for his wishes and also said that his father’s surgery went well.

Hrithik's former wife Sussanne Khan had also sent in her wishes: "He is stronger than any superhero. All will go smoothly."

Others who wished them luck included Abhishek Bachchan, Tiger Shroff, Sanjay Kapoor, Aalim Hakim, Darshan Kumar, Nandish Sandhu, Dabboo Ratnani and Vishal Dadlani.

The family has a cancer survivor in Sunaina Roshan, Hrithik's sister. She fought cervical cancer.

In medical terms, squamous cell carcinoma of the throat is a type of throat cancer. This type of throat cancer is uncommon and occurs with increasing age, suggests health website myvmc.com.

Rakesh Roshan started his career as an actor in 1970 film Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani and shot to fame with films like Buniyaad, Kaamchor and Khoobsurat. Following these, he made his debut as a director in 1987 with Khudgarz and went on to make films like Khoon Bhari Maang, Koyala and Karan Arjun.

In 2000, he launched his son Hrithik with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai opposite Ameesha Patel. Together the father-son duo created magic on screen with Koi Mil Gaya and the Krrish series.

Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan is looking forward to the release of Super 30, based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar.
