Malayalam actress Jomol has been elected as the new woman executive committee member of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). After the selection of the new officer holders, the first meeting of AMMA was held in Kochi, Kerala. As per AMMA, four female members should be in the governing body. A total of 5 women competed this time for the vacancies in the organisation and two of them lost. Now, as per reports, an argument broke out over this bylaw after the elections. With 2 female candidates losing, the majority of those participating in the general body hoped that the three who contested for the executive committee would be elected. Their hopes couldn’t materialise when advocate K Manoj Chandran, the electoral officer announced the names of people who got more votes. This included 8 including actress Ananya and seven actors who garnered more votes. The three remaining candidates were asked to co-opt members to fill the vacancies.
The actors, including Baburaj, Anoop Chandran, Joy Mathew, Kukku Parameshwaram and others have objected to this process. As per these candidates, actresses Sarayu and Ansiba, who contested for the executive committee should have been selected. The remaining one should have been co-voted. The electoral officer rejected their demands and said that both actresses were lagging behind the votes.
Other actors who have been chosen for the AMMA are actor Siddique. The 61-year-old actress has been elected as the new General Secretary (GS) of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Actors Jagdish and R Jayan have been chosen as the new Vice-Presidents. The elections took place during the annual general body meeting held at the Sree Gokulam Convention Center in Kochi on June 30.
South Superstar Mohanlal was re-elected as the AMMA president for the third consecutive term unopposed. Actors Unni Mukundan and Baburaj, on the other hand, have been elected the treasurer and joint secretary, respectively. The tenure of the new office-bearers is for three years, that is from 2024 to 2027.
AMMA holds its annual conference every three years. An important highlight of this year’s meeting was Edavela Babu’s resignation after 25 years of service as General Secretary.
