Guwahati: Actor Priyanka Chopra’s Assam connect just got a whole lot stronger with the announcement of her first Assamese production, Bhoga Khirikee (Broken Window), a film slated for late December release. The film is a joint venture between Priyanka’s production house Purple Pebbles Pictures and Easterly Entertainment, a Mumbai based company. The global superstar-turned producer made the announcement over a video clip played during a press conference in Guwahati today.
Bhoga Khirikee has been written and directed by Jahnu Barua, an internationally acclaimed film director from Assam. Priyanka, who is also the brand ambassador of Assam Tourism, said that she’s a huge fan of Barua for the thought-provoking cinema he makes. Barua believes that such initiatives can work wonders for a seemingly ossified Assamese film industry.
“I am very happy to see a joint effort for Assamese cinema this time. The Assamese film industry is an important part of us – a realization that can now be seen among the people of Assam,” said Barua.
The film is based on the real life experiences of a village girl in upper Assam and is set against the socio-political landscape of the state in 2015. The film has been extensively shot close to the wilderness of Kaziranga National Park. The cast includes Assamese actor Zerifa Wahid who plays the protagonist, actor Seema Biswas, Assamese theatre actor Joy Kashyap, and national award winner Bishnu Khargoriya, among others.
“It’s a powerful human story. I am playing Togor’s (protagonist) mother in this film. I was hoping to see some wild animals in Kaziranga during the shoot. Sometimes, we had to wake up at 4am and return by dusk. Sadly, I couldn’t make any wild friends,” said Seema Biswas.
Seema also praised the set designed by veteran Art Director, Phatik Baruah, who built a beautiful Assam-type house near the national park. The crew confessed to having wonderful moments during the shoot, cooking and gardening.
Bhoga Khirikee marks Priyanka’s fourth film as a producer, made at a budget of approximately Rs 3.5 crore. The actor has earlier produced Ventilator, Pahuna and Sarvann. Thanking the Assam government, Priyanka’smother Dr. Madhu Chopra said that a state like Assam which is so hospitable and richly endowed with natural beauty should have a thriving film industry.
