As the US presidential election approaches, both major parties are intensifying their campaigns with Kamala Harris representing the Democrats and Donald Trump for the Republicans. Amid this political climate, a new film titled The Apprentice is set to debut. The film explores Trump’s early years in business and media. The much-anticipated trailer, released on Tuesday, has already created a buzz by offering a glimpse into how the film will depict Trump’s rise in the business world.
Lasting just 88 seconds, the trailer reveals a dramatic scene where a young Trump, played by Sebastian Stan, meets lawyer Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong. Cohn, who was known for his alleged involvement in the infamous Army-McCarthy hearings as Senator Joseph McCarthy’s top lawyer, delivers a key moment when he responds to Trump’s introduction by saying, “Donald, who?”
This moment highlights that the film shows a period when Trump was still a relatively unknown figure. In another exchange, Trump asks Cohn, “How do you always win?” to which Cohn replies, “There are rules.”
Cohn then outlines his “three rules” of success. “The first rule is: attack, attack, attack. Rule two: admit nothing, deny everything. Rule three: no matter what happens, you claim victory and never admit defeat. You have to be willing to do anything to anyone to win,” he explains.
The trailer continues to show scenes that draw parallels between the film’s portrayal of Trump and the public persona he has created over the years. It concludes with an interview scene where Trump is asked, “What if you lost your fortune today?” He smiled and replied, “Well, then maybe I’ll run for president.”

Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the trailer’s description on YouTube provides further context. “A young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan), eager to make his mark as the second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, falls under the influence of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), a ruthless lawyer who played a pivotal role in shaping the Trump we know today. Cohn sees Trump as an ideal protege – someone who has raw ambition, an intense desire for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to come out on top,” it reads.
In addition to Stan and Strong, the film’s cast also includes Maria Bakalova, Martin Donovan, Ben Sullivan and Charlie Carrick in key roles as Ivana Trump, Fred Trump, Russell Eldridge and Fred Trump Jr., respectively. After making its world debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2024, The Apprentice is set for release in the US on October 11.
