MG Ramachandran-starrer Thayin Madiyil, despite receiving negative reviews from film critics, left an indelible mark in the Tamil film industry. Directed by Adurthi Subba Rao, the 1964-film starred MGR, who enjoyed massive popularity in the regional film industry. Even his presence in the film could not help the film find its audience. What became the only highlight of Thayin Madiyil was MGR’s stellar performance. This year, on December 18, the film completed 59 years of its release. Thayin Madiyil unravels the life of a top-notch jockey (a person who rides or drives a horse professionally) named Raja (MGR). Raja is an orphan and is smitten by Jeeva (B Saroja Devi), who is the daughter of a rich businessman Bhupathi’s daughter. The romance starts brewing between the duo. The storyline takes an interesting turn when Raja discovers that he is not an orphan. He gets to know that his mother is still alive and the injustice she has endured over the years. He finds out that his lady love Jeeva’s dad Bhupathi is his father.
Thayin Madiyil turned out to be a huge disappointment for the fans, not only for its lacklustre storyline but also for the absence of good music. Except for a few films like Thayin Madiyil, MGR’s treasure trove of projects includes hundreds of superhits. His films always had soulful compositions, making them popular among his fan base even more. The compositions like Kannalane Vaarunga by Jikki, Aththanum Naanthane Aththanum Naanthane by SC Krishnan, and T V Ratnam are testimony to the claim that his films were always packed with soulful renditions.
Thayin Madiyil’s music was not appreciated by the cinema and music enthusiasts. Composer SM Subbiah Naidu composed the score for the film, while TM Saundarrajan and P Sushila added their heartfelt vocals. Despite the inclusion of highly-talented lyricists like Vaali and Kannadasan, the film’s songs failed to make a mark.
