Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has branded Novak Djokovic as “the best ever” and predicted the Serbian great to win some more grand slams before announcing retirement.

Kyrgios even claimed that the current world number one never got the due credit that he deserved, despite his consistency and excellent series of performances.

“I think he (Novak Djokovic) is the best ever. Like [24] Grand Slams and I think he’s got a couple more in him as well, it’s crazy. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves enough. He’s almost been on tour for like 20 years as well, like the longevity,” Kyrgios said on the latest episode of the Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast.

Nick Kyrgios, who has a 2-1 record against Novak Djokovic, did not have a memorable outing this year due to injuries. Djokovic, on the other hand, had secured his solitary win against Kyrgios at the Wimbledon last year.

Ahead of this year’s US Open Nick Kyrgios could only manage to feature in just one ATP Tour match in 2023. Kyrgios could not take part in this year’s Australian Open due to his knee injury. Having missed the French Open, the 28-year-old made a comeback in June. But Kyrgios’ attempt to complete a comeback was not quite fruitful as he had to lose to China’s Wu Yibing in Stuttgart ahead of the Wimbledon. Kyrgios’ dream of participating in Wimbledon was also shattered due to his wrist injury. Later, the Australian tennis player decided to withdraw from this year’s US Open because of fitness issues.

Apart from injuries, Nick Kyrgios’ career has often been marred by various controversial moments on the court. When asked how does it feel to be branded as the Dennis Rodman of tennis, Kyrgios responded, as per Tennis 365, “I reckon it is cool. I kind of feel that the athletes that I like are Allen Iverson, and Dennis Rodman guys like that who kind of did it their way. You have tennis players like Federer, Djokovic, Nadal who are super professional. They have done it the really professional way, but the way I did it, I just had fun with it and I didn’t really listen to anyone and I have beaten all of these guys.”

Meanwhile, Serbian great Novak Djokovic scripted history at the Flushing Meadows earlier this year. The 36-year-old got the better of Russian Daniil Medvedev to win the US Open men’s singles title. With that win, Djokovic succeeded in claiming a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title. Djokovic, thanks to his US Open 2023 triumph, managed to match Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
