Wills Lifestyle organised a fashion competition on February 24 at Brigade Road, called ‘The Debut,’ to recognise India’s promising young talent in the fashion arena.  The contest received over 300 entries from across the country, including students from fashion institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), National Institute of Design (NID), Pearl Academy of Fashion, Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology, Amity School, Noida & J D Institute of Fashion Technology.  Out of the portfolios received, a separate jury further shortlisted the entries of potential candidates along with four direct entries through facebook. About 17 candidates took part in the fashion show in Bangalore, of these, six were selected to participate in New Delhi on March 1. The young designers were judged by fashion designers Deepika Govind and Raj Shroff.Animesh Nair, Aman Barma, Ashish Partha, Ranjeet Kumar, Swathi Singha and Harleen Kaur are the ones who emerged as the lucky candidates. They will go ahead in the competition to showcase their talent in Delhi. The judges were looking into collections which portrayed the ethnicity of rural as well as modern India. The participants displayed their best creations. Disha Sarma, tried to depict the art of Orissa with her creations and made extensive use of padchitra. However, to her disappointment, the judges were not quite happy with the simple work. Deepika said, “Instead of padchitra itself, Disha could have made use of fabrics, textiles and hand painting to create the padchitra on the materials. And above all, sticking the padchitra’s makes the outfit incapable of a wash.” On this Disha Sarma added, “I wanted to keep it original, hence I did not mess up with the art form.”Prachi Rastogi unveiled her creations, ‘Chicken Curry’. She displayed two dresses and an evening gown with a long overcoat in black and red, on raw silk and satin. This also unfortunately did not work well with the judges. The outfits based on the theme ‘Tandav’ was a sheer disappointment to judges.  The male models wore vibrant colours kurta consisting mostly orange and red. The judges thought the collection was too itchy and a mistake. Raj Shroff said, “There was too much of detail and it was overloaded with colours.” Priyansue Astana’s work revealed the royalties of Rajasthan and showcased a variety of colours which was highly appreciated by the judges.  Finally Harleen Kaur, impressed the judges with her unique collection, where she picked different elements from across India. Mostly her collection reflected the essence of North-east India, as she made extensive use of Assamese Gamucha, a traditional dress of Mizoram. The judges were enthralled by the unique combination and creativity displayed by Harleen. Raj said, “Harleen got all the elements correct and she gave us what we were looking for.”
