What do you think an ingrown hair can do? While many of us would not even have imagined the repercussions of avoiding the tiny black strand under our skin, a man was reportedly left in a coma due to the same. He was diagnosed with sepsis, a life-threatening condition triggered by infected, ingrown hair, according to the New York Post. Following the same, he went into a coma with only a 4 per cent chance of survival. This story underscoring the possible negative impact of ingrown hair is viral on social media.
Steven Spinale, a father in his late 30s, would not have survived had it not been for his zeal and positivity. It was in 2022 when his attempt to remove an ingrown hair from his groin area backfired as it escalated into sepsis, which is a severe reaction of the body’s immune system to an infection. As per the New York Post, Sepsis, if left untreated, can also lead to organ failure and death.
Steven’s sister, Michelle, through a TikTok video, informed that the doctors had declared Spinale brain dead and put him in a medically induced coma. She, on a GoFundMe page, wrote, “Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him. All they could figure out was he was bleeding internally from somewhere.”
Explaining in her fundraiser, she said, “He declined fast until he crashed and was put on life support. He caught a rare bacteria that was ravaging [through] his body and shutting down all his organs. He is severely septic and in shock.”
Following the critical nature of the life-threatening condition, the doctors decided to place him in a medically induced coma as this was the only way left to allow his body to heal. Initially, he was declared brain-dead and had a very low chance of survival.
However, after a month of intensive treatments and procedures including an open heart surgery, Steven defied the odds and left the doctors shocked with his recovery. He is currently showcasing impeccable improvement and has no brain damage.
